The Humpty Dumpty Love Song

Is there a better band out there right now than Travis? I mean these guys make the best music ever. Yeah I know this song is ten years old but it kicks ass and since half the time I live in the 90's I'm happy to post this video for your viewing pleasure. You're welcome.

In early 2001 I took a trip to Australia to visit some friends who now hate me. While there we flew north to visit the Great Barrier Reef, and we stayed at this hotel right on the ocean. All around the hotel there were huge white cockatoos flying all over the place. Keep in mind these birds are not only incredibly beautiful but you can also teach them to talk. These ones didn't talk because they lived in Australia where the people have stupid accents and say words like "ta", so they instead chose to remain mute. The Australians despise cockatoos, calling them "flying rats." In my opinion there's a bit of a difference between a pigeon and a cockatoo. Like the difference between an English accent and an Australian one. As in English people sound cool but Australians sound like god damn morons.

One morning I woke up and watched the sun rise over the ocean while MTV played on the TV in the main room and the cockatoos waddled around on tree branches. While watching all this, I noticed MTV was playing the video from "Why Does it Always Rain on Me?" I'd never heard Travis before that, but from then on I was hooked. I'm still hooked.

I have had experiences like this with U2 songs, Coldpay songs, Radiohead, Bush (Glycerine), Staind, Snow Patrol, David Grey, REM, you get the point. If you think about it all of these kinds of songs have a very folksy surreal disposition that somehow captures reflective moments and gives them a sort of clarity when they are recalled in conjunction with the music. Something similar happens with smells we encounter when we are having a very poignant experience. I love music, especially when it is closely associated with special moments in my life like the time I went on a spur of the moment trip to see U2 in Arizona with some buddies from College.

I took my two sons to see their first concert in Hawaii last year at Aloha Stadium. It was the very last show of their most recent U2 tour. The opening band was Pearl Jam and Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day also came out to play a few songs with U2 and Eddie Vedder. It was a fantastic concert. It was the third time I had seen U2 on that tour but being there with my two young sons (ages 10 and 12) was really fun. I felt like I was passing on some of my all time favorite music to them. Not long after they got their first iPods and I helped them load them up for the first time. That was really cool to go through all of my music with them and pick out stuff for them to try. We spent over 12 hours one weekend doing this, it was great. We should all share more music. Thanks for sharing Travis Dude.
